On picking up the needles and a knitting UFO

Year old socks

I started these socks in 2005, planning to give them as a gift to Kev. Well, it’s the last day of 2006, and I finally picked them back up again. I am almost done turning the heel on one, the second one will be next.

I used a combination of directions for these socks:
“Really Clear Instructions for Knitting Toe-Up Socks” by Cynthia Spencer
and
“Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles” by Cat Bordhi.

I will admit that the only thing I really got from the second book was to use one set of long circular needles, and truly have learned how to knit socks with the first book. I am still working on making nice and neat short rows for the heel. I haven’t knit for quite a while and my brain was fuzzy on that technique. I was doing well on my Shapely Tank pattern for short rows, but again, that one has been sitting for about a year+ now.

A test run fitting… yah! it fits :-)

heel turned... and it fits!

…and now, at 11pm on the last day of the year… I have finished turning the second heel. I guess that now means I can let these rest for another year before I work on the leg portion! LOL! kidding, I hope to have these finished in January. Of 2007, that is.

On Finished Projects…

Well, I think all my Christmas shopping is finished as of this morning. Now on to the wrapping and shipping for some. This week I completed the Bob the Builder quilt for Daniel’s Christmas gift. I have a panel that I will make into a pillow case for him as well. I backed the quilt with Minkee, and it is so soft and snuggly–I know he will love it. The quilting with Minkee as a backing went very smoothly. I did not do any fancy quilting, and kept it strictly utlilitarian–stitch in the ditch. I did use a walking foot, and had the presser foot set at medium. I quilted along easily, no puckering problems at all. I do know some have said they had problems with the stretchiness of Minkee, but I made sure not to overly tug on the fabric, I didn’t want it to gather after the quilting was done.
