On today’s art project

furryflipflops.jpg

Here is today’s art project: Furry Flip Flops :-) You can find the directions here, but truth be told, you don’t need any tools to do this one. If you can make slip knots, you can make these. It just so happens I don’t have any crochet hooks, but I figured it out. I might have to make some pink furry ones just to annoy Kev (nope, he’s not overly fond of these feet treats! LOL!). Back to the drawing board.

On our 2nd adoption process

We got the news today! Our homestudy has been approved! I guess that means that we need to seriously consider getting the extra bedroom child-ready :-) We’ll see where God leads us on this path! I’m very excited!

On my first felted purse

felteda2-17.JPG

I finished my first felted purse/handbag today. It finished at about 8×10″ (began at about 14″ long before washing, didn’t measure the width). It fits my pocket book nicely, and I do like the way it looks. But I would like to work another that is shorter and wider, and maybe one that I can put on a purse frame. I used the Party Purses pattern from Fiber Trends. It’s nice to feel I have my artistic groove back again.

More on the pathetic ski season

Oh yeah!!!!! Stevens Pass is opening on Thursday (limited lifts, of course, but it’s opening!!!!). Kev better get prepared because we are going this weekend :-) Gonna call on Wednesday about getting Daniel into the Kid’s Club. Wahooooo!!!!

Yet another purse, this time with recycled sari silk

silk purse.jpg (click for a large view) I love the yarn used for this small purse. It’s from Mango Moon, recycled silk sari fabric. The colors are so beautiful in the sunlight, not so easy to capture under household lighting. I used an eyelash yarn to create a border at the top, and also did 8 rows using the eyelash yarn with the silk yarn at the bottom. For the strap, I used the cool gadget called Embellish Knit! to knit the strap. Nothing like twirling a handle and getting a cool knitted cord in the end :-) I used the eyelash yarn for the strap too so it looks a bit hairy :-) I added a free form pin with an antique button to the purse. It just fits with it. For the lining, Although I like floppy purses, I did not want this one to be so, nor be stretchy. Within the lining, I added TimTex to give the purse more of a pocketbook feel. It now holds the shape that I was wanting. In measuring the lining, it’s approx. 6×7″, with the black eyelash border, the actual size of the purse is a bit larger. Perfect for a date night.

I love all the textures of yarns and fibers available. I can feel my artistic wings spreading even further! I am thinking about how I can work in the Mango Moon silk fiber into my Feburary Journal Quilt Page (Quilt Art list challenge). Haven’t quite figured that out yet, but I don’t want the design to be overly technical.

On a new purse

purse2005.JPG purse2005a.jpg Today I made a new purse for myself. I used a fake suede, fluffy trim, shell embellishment around the trim, and two different Swarovsky iron-on crystal designs for each side.

I do like how it turn out, but I am having problems with my Juki TL98E–it’s not liking sewing through thicker layers lately and I can’t pinpoint the culprit. It’s like the needle is hitting the bobbin case, or hitting to the side of the plate or something, of course breaking the needle in the process. I have tried oiling and cleaning, using a new bobbin, rethreading, really looking in the bobbin area… did I miss something? Any suggestions?

On Saying Goodbye to a Good Friend

Louie.jpgToday I had to make the hard decision to have my dearest friend put down. I have been battling this for a year now, and I couldn’t ignore it any longer. Louie was a gift from a 5yr old student in class that I was a student teacher for at Washington State University. She has been with me through some of the toughest times of my life, always there and willing to settle in on my lap and send out the purrs that would make me smile. It was always a running joke that my old girl would outlive us all–she’s had so many ailments and hardly any teeth, but she was one tough old broad!

I am not sure of Louie’s exact age, but she was born on a Palouse farm and ended up on the west side of WA. She definitely did not lose her edge on catching bugs, and still had days where she would act like quite the kitten. She was working on her 14th year with me. I miss my furry friend, but knowing that she is happy and painfree, chasing bugs in Heaven… makes it a little easier to let her go. She’s probably sitting on my dad’s lap right now!

This is my latest completed project, can’t remember what yarn I used as I inadvertantly tossed the wrapper. It’s a fun boa :-) soft and furry, and quite pink!
