On more birdwatching

Unless someone is for certain otherwise, I am going with a Townsend’s Warbler for identification. They are pretty!
Townsend's Warbler
I think the birds were around all day yesterday. We must be have good enough seed to be on the permanent snacking route or something :-) I used Kevin’s camera to try and get some better photos, and a couple did turn out ok. I tend to be shaky, so mix that in with a flitting bird and we have issues.
Townsend's Warbler

Kevin took the picture below. This was in the early evening and he stuck around while everyone was outside on the deck! I guess either the guy is getting too fatten up to move or he knows we are harmless. After the eating that went on earlier, I tend to think it is the first thought.

on… Happy friday

Foggy morning, looking out the back door

Today was a quiet, pleasant, foggy morning. But there was a flurry of activity through the trees and the bird feeders. Though, it would appear that Daniel’s peanut butter pine cone with birdseed was a little more popular with one bird. I am not positive, but I think this might be a Goldfinch. I will have to scour bird sites and see if I can find a match. If I had Kevin’s camera, detail would have been much better, but this bugger kept flitting from one spot to another. I would have probably missed him in the process of finding him!

On a few sunset shots

Kevin has been trying to talk me into heading over to Edmonds for some sunset shots over the Olympics. Today after hitting Costco, I finally agreed. I’ve been having an off week, so even though most of my own shots really stunk (very grainy, didn’t have my settings right on some shots), it was nice to watch the sunset.

We had quite a long list of shipping methods pass us by while taking pics. A tug pulling a barge (my shots were grainy and sucked), two trains, a plane (granted, this wasn’t a cargo plane), and a fully stocked cargo ship heading north towards the Pacific Ocean. Quite a lesson in how we get our goods.

I like to take pictures with the idea in mind that a quilt or some great piece of fiber art will happen. So far, nothing has really grabbed me. I have a few other shots from tonight on my flickr site, but nothing that exciting, IMO. Click through one of the pics above.

On a rainy, summer day

snail herd
What happens on a rainy, summer, Washington day? The snails (and slugs) come out. I took the picture with three snails in it first, and then later went snail hunting to find some more. I couldn’t find any more big groups that I originally found them in (there were actually four more snails above the three, but the view wasn’t very interesting, and my back was getting wet from the rain. Thinking now I should have snapped them anyway), I am sure they are currently munching on my weeds as I type this.

On exploring the Puget Sound yesterday…

Kingston: Ferry ride Edmonds: Weathered Edmonds: The explorer

Kevin’s parents and sisters came to visit last week after flying down from Alaska to attend his brother’s retirement ceremony from the Air Force. Yesterday we took the boys and Kev’s sisters to do some tourist stuff: Space Needle and Center fun, along with a drive up to Edmonds to take a ferry run.

We were able to get some pretty good pics at the beach and ferry, though, mine not as great… but at least the clouds were dramatic. I have a few more on my flickr page (click through one of the pics here), and Kev has some on his flickr site (or click through the Saxophonist below. I love that picture), and photo blog. There is always something interesting going on at the Center. Yesterday was a celebration for Bastille Day. So, when the hands were free I grabbed a few pictures.
Saxophonist Seattle Center
The ferry ride was nice. But thanks to 9/11 stuff, walk-on riders now have to disembark instead of being able to ride round trip. It is “free” when traveling east, so it didn’t make much sense to me to have to get off (we paid first since we were traveling west first).

I think that the real story is that Washington State Ferries want to make sure they collect as many fares as possible, so if you get on in Kingston, you have to get off in Edmonds and pay to get back home. Makes sense, I guess, but highly irritating when you have an armload of crap that you have to carry off and on again.

Happy Birthday USA!

Happy Birthday, USA! I have been feeling especially emotional lately. I think it’s because I miss my parents. Songs come on the radio that I have heard a hundred times before suddenly have me crying. Kevin and I were talking baseball today, and I remembered Johnny Oates who managed the Rangers had died following being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Anyway, Kevin was reading off a blurb about him having been honored before he died at a game, and that nearly sent me into tears. Today I took Daniel to get a haircut at the same barber shop that I would take Dad to, and while looking at some books with Daniel while waiting our turn, listening to the older gentlemen chatting about all things… again, sent me off into reminisce land. I hate how much has changed over the 5yrs (with both my parents having passed away), but the alternative would have been terrible with both being in terrible condition.

IMG_1709 Yesterday we went to Bothell’s parade, ran into some friends, and were later planning to attend a BBQ at their home.

Darrin was a major pill, so I stayed home with him and Daniel and Kev went over. I hated being alone (nevermind being alone with a cranky and crying 4yo–I kid you not, he cried from the time he got up from his nap to darn-near the time he went to bed for the night), and was remembering how the 4th of July was my mom’s 2nd favorite holiday (behind Christmas). She would create great parties, inviting friends, and of course family was always there. Now so much has changed. So, I ate cookies. Granted, they were 4th of July cookies, but I felt really stuck in sorrow.

I hope I can pull out of the tailspin and simply be able to remember my parents without so many tears. I am sure over time it will get a little easier.

Heartbeat Sweater progressMy Heartbeat Sweater Progress:
I am not doing very well with measuring for length. But I think I am going to do about eight more rows, and I should be done with the length, then time to fill in the sides.

BTW, clicking on the firetruck will take you to Kev’s images at flickr. He got some neat ones, including a couple of fireworks shots. He explained the shutter delay/speed on that, but I don’t remember. His photoblog also has great pics too. I wish I would have taken a few pics of the SeaFair Pirates. Their ship “Moby Duck” stopped right in front of us at the parade, and anyone who has witnessed these guys knows that when you hear the winding-up sound, you better cover your ears because a big blast is about to happen! The percussion was enough to about knock you over :-) Here is their album of pics from the parade this year: http://www.seafairpirates.org/PiratePics/archive2007/070704-July4Bothell/Flash01/ Partway down the first page of pics, you’ll see the Duck, take a peek.

On today’s activities

Dragonfly(?) Big Bird?
This dragonfly(?) sat on our rocks for at least an hour this afternoon. I could get within a few feet for pictures. It flew up a few times, but landed back in the same place. I tried to get Kevin to take a picture of it with his cool camera, and after he realized that it was still in the same area after an hour, he attempted it. The bug flew off as soon as Kev approached :-) I feel lucky he posed for me!

UAMQ all fixed
I fixed my mystery quilt this afternoon during Darrin’s naptime. Again, fabrics from Cherrywood Fabrics… love love love them :-) I was also able to work on more of my Journal Quilt after fixing the mystery quilt. But then Darrin woke up and I wasn’t able to work on it as much as I was hoping.

Say Cheese!
Hi Mom! :-) I wish my camera focused better when I turn off the flash. I like this picture though. The quilt on the wall, “Skagit Valley Scarlet” by Caryl Bryer Fallert. Love that quilt.

On closing the book on our 2nd adoption

We finalized Darrin’s adoption this morning! We are now parents of four boys, ranging in age from 22yrs to 2.5 months… whew!
Adoption #2, finalized!

On a freezing cold sunset photog session

After our Seahawks lost their final game of the year in overtime (wahhh… but we fans are proud of our team!), Kev and I took a drive to Edmonds to get some shots in before sunset. I was telling Kev that getting pics on Sunset Ave in the morning is the best (with the sun shining on the Olympic Mountains), but our sunset tonight did not fail us. After walking the fishing pier and getting in some pictures, we parked up on Sunset Ave and joined many other budding photogs to get in a good sunset. I have some resized images parked at my flickr site, but here are some to enjoy (also, checking in my contacts, Kevin has some good pictures too).

On those convenient clothing drop-off “donation” bins

KOMO 4 Investigates: Donation Deception Next time you decide to donate used clothing, and you want to be sure it’s going to charity, make sure that you read the clothing drop off bin words carefully. One of Seattle’s local news stations did an investigative report on the bins, and found that specifically the bins by “Retex NW” is NOT a charity. They are actually a FOR PROFIT business. What’s deceptive, is that they state on the bins that your “proceeds benefit non-profits and charities.”. This wording has Washington state’s Secretary of State looking into this deceptive business.

Next time you pass by a clothing drop-off bin, and you want to make sure it is going to a charity or non-profit, make sure it’s NOT going to Retex Northwest. They state they aren’t a charity, but they do give to charity… want to know how much this FOR-PROFIT company gave in 2005?:
1. Snohomish County YMCA: $250
2. Fire District 1 in Snohomish County: $500
3. $1000 to Healing the Children (unsure of this charity, never heard of it but it may be legit).
For a grand total of $1750

Yep… their wording of “proceeds benefit non-profits and charities” is true… right? Considering the cost of clothing, that could be the total of 2 bins-full. And these bins are ALL over the place!!!!!!

Please reconsider and stick with non-profits that you know are actually just that before using those convenient bins. And make sure if you are using a bin, that you KNOW where your donation is going. If you send it off to Retex Northwest, you may as well have a garage sale for your own benefit. You can’t write off your clothing donation to Retex Northwest on your taxes, you realize.

On Visions and Drinking

This morning while driving Daniel to school, on the radio, KMPS was interviewing Sha (pronounced Shay) Nohr, who’s daughter is a friend of Laura Hatch, the 17 yr old who’s car had crashed into a ravine and survived 8 days before being found.

Sha was really wonderful to listen to. She had vivid dreams about finding Laura, and on Sunday, she and her daughter decided to go look for Laura because of the dreams. At one point on Sunday, they were going to stop because it was getting late, but they decided to look in one more area. Sha went down into the ravine that eventually led to Laura, and because of the brush, she couldn’t see anything. She did notice that branches were broken around her, but thought perhaps that was from one of the wind storms. Nothing really unusual. She was going to come back up the hill, but her daughter insisted and said, “keep going, keep going” which was what she was told in her dream. Had Sha not listened, she may have never continued on to find Laura.

The road that Laura’s car went off was a windy two lane road, and apparently the section that her car went off was the only partition that did not have a guard rail. Two passerby’s stopped while Sha and her daughter were searching, thinking they had been in an accident. It was at this time that Sha found the car, but did not feel she could go forward to the side of the vehicle, probably finding a body. One of the passerby’s came down, and saw that there was a body in the backseat. When Sha and the man were attempting to take the license plate off (to be identified by police), Laura made a moaning sound. She was conscious, and when Sha’s daughter came down to talk to Laura, Laura said to her that she couldn’t believe she brought her mom there. Obviously unclear as to the extent of what had happened to her! Laura was also saying how she needed to hurry because she was going to be late for curfew–she did not realize it had been 8 days.

This section may sound judgmental on my part, but I can’t understand how her family would state “We had already given her up and let her be dead in our hearts” (her mother, Jean Hatch). And also thinking that she was a runaway. I am also a bit peeved at the kids that were at the party that did not give the location after quite some time of where the party was (so that the search could be better traced at the beginning). I think that maybe I am reading into what the media has put into text, so I shouldn’t pass on judgment… but I could not give up my persistence if my child turned up missing. I know they put out a missing persons alert, so I am thinking that the context of the statement of thinking she was dead after a week may be misconstrued.

Brings about another point. Teenage drinking. I know it happens, and just because I never did it doesn’t mean that my friends did not while I was growing up. Kids don’t understand the enormous burden they are placing on themselves when they take that drink to fit in and be like everyone else. And on top of that, driving… that is very horrifying.

Parents, your kids are not perfect and straight-laced. Just get that out of your head. Know where your kids are going. there are even beacons you can have placed in a vehicle if you are that concerned (one of the security companies is now doing this to be able to get into the On Star market). Parenthood doesn’t end when you think your child is adult-like. You still need to know the basics: who, what, where, when.

I have a feeling that the Eastside group of kids at that party may be a little shaken up after this–I hope. I hope that if an event like that were to ever happen again, they would use at least use that one brain little brain cell that says to call home for a ride.

Laura Hatch, God was with you and saved you for a reason. Use your life, it’s time to earn it. My prayers to you.

And to Sha Nohr, unlike what that Southern Baptist preacher told you–that these visions are from the devil (when you told him that you had a visit from a grandmother), you have a gift, and I don’t believe that anyone from Laura Hatch’s family would disagree. If that was a vision from the devil, I don’t want to know that Southern Baptist’s “God”.
